The Process
Washington DC, Union Station | Column Restoration
Blast-Master was tasked to first remove the cast iron splayed bases and canopy tops from the columns. The paint coatings were removed by abrasive blasting them. Then the columns needed structural putty repair. Once completed, the TNEMEC triple paint system was applied.
New replica castings of the capitals and tangs were made, and we needed to fit them onto the columns. Eric needed to make a jig for drilling, tapping and counter sinking the holes to secure them to the tops of the columns. The capitals and tangs also received the TNEMEC triple paint system.
